So much drama, so little time to take it all in. The Balenciaga and Spain gala at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum drew celebrities, haute couture collectors and fashion designers to San Francisco for an event that many already consider to be the party of the year. The $2,500-a-ticket
dinner was certainly their fundraiser of the year, garnering $1 million for museum programs. The museum show is a 130-piece retrospective of the work of Cristobal Balenciaga and is on display through July 4.
During cocktail hour, the fashion spectacle was in full force, with guests in vintage and new garments. In a tent decorated with purple tables and bare trees adorned with oranges by Stanlee Gatti, McCalls Catering served up crab and avocado dinner salads and fillet of beef with morels, as the Archangel Flamenco music group (chosen by Bowles and flown in from Seville) played.
The retrospective drew from the de Young’s 12,000-piece textile collection.
